  1. EricΓÇÖs sister, Beth Heiden, was a fantas-
  2. tic athlete in her own right. A year younger
  3. than Eric, Beth was the womenΓÇÖs speed
  4. skating all-around world champion in 
  5. 1979. At the 1980 Olympics, she won a
  6. bronze medal in the 3,000 meters while
  7. coming in fifth and seventh (twice) in her
  8. other three events.

  10. Beth and Eric both had trained on bi-
  11. cycles to help their skating. In 1980, Beth
  12. won the world bicycling road-race
  13. championship! While attending the
  14. University of Vermont, Beth mastered
  15. another sport: cross-country skiing. In 
  16. 1983, she won the NCAA championship 
  17. in the 7.5 kilometer event.
